Participation in FIRST will contribute to John Bowne’s overreaching motto “The Relentless Pursuit of Success” by engaging students with STEM in action. Building the FRC robot for competition, as well as all aspects the competition encompasses, will enable our students to enhance their understanding of the technological world as well as actively put that acuity to the test. While the FIRST program seamlessly aligns with the Doshi House curriculum at John Bowne, it is an added bonus that many students have chosen to cross-over in their focus from other “houses” in the school including: Agriculture, Bowne House, and the Writing. FRC will facilitate the intellectual development of both students whose focus in STEM as well as others with cross-curricular intentions. FIRST aligns with ALL Common Core standards set for Math, Technical Subjects, Science and Language Arts. The competitive nature of FIRST games encourages the application of critical thinking skills and academic knowledge to real-world problems.
This team is unique simply because it is made of the students who seek but have yet to fully realize the opportunities waiting for them in the world of professional STEM. Likewise, nearly the entire team comes from groups underrepresented in STEM careers in ethnic background, sex and economic home status. This is an opportunity to provide focus for students who truly want to achieve and rise “above” their current economic situations. Our kids come from largely disadvantaged pecuniary circumstances but from hard-working parents, largely immigrant who are fully supportive of having their children experience opportunities that were not afforded to they themselves.
